Denver Fireplace Warehouse ETC – What Makes For an Outdoor Gas Fireplace?
Indoors or out, on the surface it may seem that gas fireplaces are all similar regardless of their installation setting. What makes one an indoors only unit, another indoor/outdoor, and yet another an outdoor only unit?
Outdoor Gas Fireplaces Are Built Differently
Even before we get into some of the differing installation and clearance issues between indoor and outdoor gas fireplaces, it must be noted that despite similar materials and construction techniques, gas fireplaces intended for outdoor use feature key construction differences.
Foremost, outdoor gas fireplaces are passive radiant heaters only. They do not, and should not, have any sort of electrical blower motor upon them. A blower would become an electrical hazard in very short order with its potential exposure to the elements while in operation.
Outdoor gas fireplaces usually also feature some, or all, of the following features: LP conversion capability, wind screening of some type, anti-wind gas shut off valves, and extra heavy duty valves capable of cold weather operation.
They Are Installed Differently Too
Additionally, all outdoor gas fireplaces are required by the manufacturers to be installed in a manner that enables the unit to be exposed to rain and snow melt. The standard precaution that almost all outdoor gas fireplace manufacturers provide in their booklets is that the unit be framed into a waterproof enclosure, or totally sealed from the elements if standing free. They are also universally required to make effective use an installed drip pan to keep water from accumulating under the bottom of the unit.
They Are Covered Differently
It is not at all uncommon to see lifetime and limited lifetime manufacturer warranties attached to properly installed indoor gas fireplaces. A typical manufacturer’s warranty for an outdoor only gas fireplace runs a maximum of five years.
Many of The Same Beautiful Choices
Other than these design, installation, and warranty considerations, you’ll generally find that outdoor gas fireplaces feature many of the same options that their indoors cousins do. You typically can get your choice of Denver fireplace designs, a selection of ceramic logs or stones to suit your tastes, and some unique accent lighting options too.
